This week's collection of whimsical and curious stories will mark the occasion of Barbados becoming a Republic after 394 years under the British monarchy (replacing Queen Elizabeth II with a new President, Dame Sandra Mason).
Proving your independence - Even though Barbados has been an independent state since 1966 and last week's replacement of its official head of state was a solemn and dignified affair, it still offers an opportunity to talk about a related case - Fiji. You see, Fiji gained its independence from Great Britain in 1970 during a ceremony in which Prince Charles presented the newly independent nation with a document affirming its new status. Unfortunately, this declaration of independence was subsequently misplaced and despite a thorough search by the government, was never found again. In 2010, Fiji requested another copy from London where the British filing system and a photo copying machine saved the day.
